Federal, state, and Rutgers deadlines for financial aid are changing for the 2017-2018 school year.

For the 2017-2018 school year, you can file your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as early as October 1, 2016, using income data from your 2015 taxes.

What’s Changing?

  • You are now able to file your FAFSA earlier, starting October 1.
  • The priority deadline for returning Rutgers students is now January 15.
  • The priority deadline for incoming Rutgers students is now December 1.
  • You’ll use earlier tax information on your FAFSA.
  • You’ll be able to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to directly import your tax information on your FAFSA.

When to File the FAFSA: Priority Deadlines

Returning Rutgers students should file the FAFSA before the priority deadline of January 15 to be considered for all available funding.

Incoming Rutgers students should file before the priority deadline of December 1 to maximize financial aid and merit scholarship eligibility.

You are also highly encouraged to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) when filing your FAFSA. The DRT transfers your income information directly from the IRS to the FAFSA, which improves the accuracy of this process and reduces the likelihood that you will have to submit additional documentation to the Office of Financial Aid.

State Deadline Changes

New Jersey deadlines for consideration for the Tuition Aid Grant (TAG), Governor’s Urban Scholarship, and NJ STARS II programs are also changing. Failure to meet these new deadlines will result in a significant loss of state aid.
