Financial Aid for Summer Courses

Institutional Aid

Some campus units may have a limited amount of institutional grant funds for the summer semester. These funds are not guaranteed from year to year and are offered based on funding availability and require that you have maxed out your loan eligibility for the academic year.

Please be advised: The Institutional Aid Application will not be available for Summer 2024.

Eligibility

Most students can only receive student loans that are based on remaining eligibility from the 2023-2024 academic year. Students who are eligible for a Pell Grant during the 2023-2024 academic year may qualify for this assistance for the summer. The Office of Financial Aid will award remaining loan eligibility and a Pell Grant for any student who qualifies.

Students must be actively enrolled at the time of their application submission and be registered for coursework in Summer Session I or the 12-Week Session. Students only registered for coursework in Summer Session II will not be considered for institutional grant resources.

Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)

Students applying for summer aid will be held to the standards of the academic progress policy. Your summer aid is contingent upon meeting SAP, or the requirements of your academic plan, if applicable. Academic progress will be measured after spring grades are posted. Grants will not post to your term bill until after SAP is reviewed in mid-June. If you fail to meet academic progress, or the requirements of your plan, your summer aid will be canceled.

NJ Tuition Aid Grant (TAG)

Students taking summer courses in 2024 may be eligible for summer TAG. If eligible, you will see a projected summer TAG award listed in the Financial Aid Student Portal.

Important Information

  • Summer TAG will remain in a projected status until the end of the summer term. The funds will not credit to your term bill until the amount has been finalized based on your summer credits earned.
  • Summer TAG cannot exceed actual tuition charges and will be reduced if it does after final summer credits earned have been determined.
  • Summer TAG may not display on your term bill. Please look for your projected summer TAG amount in the Financial Aid Student Portal and subtract that amount from the total due when paying your summer term bill.

Federal Aid

Enrollment

Undergraduates and RBS students (both undergraduate and graduate) must be enrolled for at least 6 summer credits to receive federal direct loans or a parent PLUS loan for undergraduate students. Graduate and law students must be enrolled for at least 3 summer credits to receive federal direct loans or a graduate PLUS loan.

Summer federal aid will be awarded automatically to eligible students based on the information provided on the FAFSA. Students will receive notification when their summer aid is available in the Financial Aid Student Portal.
