FWSP Job Application Instructions

The Federal Work Study Program

Not only does participation in the FWSP allow you to earn funds to offset your expenses while enrolled at Rutgers, but it is also an opportunity to gain valuable on-the-job experience. Whether you work in a job closely related to your major or not, you are sure to gain transferable skills that will be useful to you in any future career. Always treat your FWSP job as a real job with a great opportunity for professional growth, and of course the added bonus of making some much needed money!

Your FWSP award will appear under your financial aid awards, but it is NOT credited to your term bill. You will be compensated only for hours worked in your FWSP job and can earn up to the award amount listed in the financial aid student portal.

Eligibility Requirements

Getting Started

Camden Students

All first-time FWSP-eligible students must complete a job application. You can access the job application via the link at the bottom of this page.

On the Rutgers Camden Campus, students are not placed into FWSP positions. It is the students’ responsibility to search for FWSP positions that interest them. Through this process, students can develop professional skills that will enable them to succeed in the future, such as job searching and interviewing techniques.

Prior to the start of the academic year, students will receive an email letting them know that jobs are available to view in Handshake. https://rutgers-camden.joinhandshake.com/login Students can log in and begin to apply for FWSP jobs. It is not guaranteed that students will be hired.

Newark, New Brunswick, and Rutgers Health Students

All first-time FWSP-eligible students must complete a job application.  You can access the job application via the link at the bottom of this page.

The Student Employment Office uses a matching system to place FWSP-eligible students in approved on-campus jobs.  It is very important that you take the time to fill out the application in its entirety, with as much detail as possible, giving special attention to the job skills and job selection sections.

You will receive notification of your job placement via email prior to the start of the academic year. When you receive your job placement, you will also receive contact information for a staff member from the department you have been assigned to. It is your responsibility to reach out to that person to receive details, instructions and further information pertaining to your job.

Job placements are processed on a first-come, first-served basis, so you should complete your job application as soon as possible.  If you do not complete your job application in a timely manner, we cannot guarantee that you will be placed in a job.

  • Opportunities for advancement exist in many different hiring departments
  • Acquire references to aid you in your future employment endeavors
  • Learn to balance school and work
  • Meet other students and exceptional professional staff/faculty members at work
  • Earn money to off-set your college expenses

Additional Information

Unless there are extenuating circumstances that will prevent you from successfully fulfilling the responsibilities of your job, the job placement you receive is the job you are expected to work in for the academic year.  Please keep in mind that if you are not placed in a department that you requested or in a job title that you feel you would most prefer, it does not mean that you will not be successful in your job.  Take the time to talk to your assigned supervisor to learn about the details of the job. You might be surprised at how much you end up enjoying your job– many jobs are different than you would think just from looking at the job title or name of the department.

Continuing students will receive an email each spring regarding their job placement for the upcoming academic year (assuming they remain eligible).  Students can either stay in the same job or indicate that they would not like to return.  Students who do not wish to return will be able to complete a new job application upon receiving their financial aid package for the upcoming academic year.

Select opportunities to work for non-profit agencies are available through the FWSP Off-Campus Community Service Program. Students who are interested in exploring these opportunities and are able to travel to off-campus locations can view a list of paid community service jobs.

If you are not eligible for the FWSP, you will not be authorized to complete the job application. However, you can search for non-FWSP job openings through the Rutgers Handshake.

Staff members on each campus are here to support you in your participation in the FWSP.  Don’t hesitate to reach out to your regional One Stop Student Services Center for assistance! If you are a Rutgers Health student, please contact your campus Financial Aid Office for further assistance.
