Master Promissory Notes & Entrance Counseling for Loans

Were you awarded federal direct loans? Both subsidized and unsubsidized direct loans require the completion of a Master Promissory Note and entrance counseling interview before the first disbursement can be made. At Rutgers, students who do not complete these two steps before October 1 will have their federal direct loans cancelled.

You do not need to complete the MPN and entrance counseling every year you take federal loans. If you already completed both in your first year, or the first time you took a federal direct loan, you will not need to complete them again – they are valid for 10 years. Check if you need to complete these documents by viewing your missing document status.

How to Decline All or Part of Your Loans

If you are not planning on taking the federal direct loans offered to you, you must complete the Data Change Form (DCF). Follow the instructions on this blog post to learn how to do so.

If you cancel all of your loans, the MPN and entrance counseling required documents will be waived from your record. If you reduce the loans, you will still need to submit these documents.
